We Will Take Good Care of HIm

Diagnosed with Biliary Atresia, a rare pediatric liver disease, and receiving a transplant at six months old, my connection to transplant is shaped by secondhand accounts. We Will Take Good Care Of Him details my year-long navigation through my history and memory to better understand my family’s experiences and the emotional weight of our shared history.

Inspired by Dr. Sukru Emre’s comforting words to my parents before surgery, as their world was upended and their “sense of right and wrong were put to the test,” these words became “a blanket of warmth,” guiding their emotional resilience. Reflecting on the profound gift of life, the physical and metaphysical relationships between recipients and donors, and the societal and cultural complexities that play into organ donation, I hope to raise awareness about pediatric liver disease and the broader realities of organ donation.
